Arthritis in the knees can be one of the most painful joint problems. People with arthritis often suffer from knee pain. The first thing is arthritis refers to the inflammation of a joint. This condition is characterized by a degeneration in the cartilage and bones of the knee.

What is knee Arthritis?

The knee joint is a combination of three bones (the femur, tibia, and patella) that form two separate joints: one between the femur and tibia at the knee and one between the patella and femur knew as the patellofemoral joint.

Two types of knee arthritis can occur.   One type occurs from normal use of the joint and the other type happens when something irritates your knee joint, such as inflammation or infection.

Two types of places knee arthritis occur one is tibiofemoral joint and the patellofemoral joint.

Arthritis pain in the knee develops when the cartilage (connective tissue) in the knee wears away, and bony bumps called spurs to develop. Bone-on-bone contact causes stiffness, pain, and inflammation.

Types of arthritis knee pain

Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid are the two different types of arthritis knee pains in the knees. Osteoarthritis is happen where degeneration of the bones and Rheumatoid is happening inflammatory in the joint.

  • Osteoarthritis
  • Rheumatoid

Osteoarthritis of the knee

An osteoarthritis is a common form of arthritis that can cause pain and stiffness in your knee. It happens when your cartilage—the padding between your knee bones—breaks down over time, causing the bones to rub together. Osteoarthritis is common in older adults, affecting more than 15 million adults in India, age 65 or older.

In a pain-free knee joint, there is a large gap between the bones (tibia and femur) because of a thick layer of cartilage and lubricating fluid.

When the knee bends or straightens, the smooth bone surfaces glide over one another with the joint moving easily due to the cushioning from cartilage.

Osteoarthritis can cause bumps to form on the surfaces of your knee joints; these bumps are called osteophytes, or knee bone spurs.

Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis causes painful inflammation of the joints as well as excess fluid. It often leads to the destruction of the cartilage, which makes the joints even more inflamed. The disease often leads to the destruction of cartilage and results in swollen, painful, warm joints and severe limitations on movement. Rheumatoid arthritis causes swollen and painful joints and stiffness limits movement.

Rheumatoid arthritis pain in the knees is less common than it is in other areas of the body. The condition is categorized as a chronic means long-term, systemic stage it creates pain throughout the body and inflammatory stage it will swell. It currently affects about one percent of the world’s population, three times more often in women than men.

Rheumatoid arthritis is a disease that causes inflammation of the joints and tends to affect the small joints of the hands, feet, and neck. Aches and pains in the knees are common with

rheumatoid arthritis as is morning joint stiffness that eases with movement.

Knee Arthritis affection location in the knee

It is caused in two different locations in the knee. Those two are is Tibiofemoral arthritis and patellofemoral arthritis.

Tibiofemoral arthritis

Knee arthritis most commonly affects the tibiofemoral joint. This form of arthritis damages the cartilage lining the bottom of the thigh bone and top of the shin bone, causing pain, swelling, and stiffness. Knee pain stemming from the tibiofemoral joint tends to be felt deep inside the joint and typically causes knee stiffness, weakness, and swelling.

patellofemoral arthritis

Kneecap arthritis affects the patellofemoral joint, where the patella meets the thigh bone. The knee moves using muscles that pull on a patellar tendon to slide the kneecap up and down in a groove at the front of your thigh bone.

Patellofemoral arthritis is a painful condition affecting the cartilage on the back of the kneecap and lining of the knee joint. The pain tends to be felt at the front of the knee and is made worse by activities such as climbing stairs, getting up from sitting or squatting.
